Santo Domingo is not only a city. If you want to enjoy a beach crammed with Caribbean flavor, go to Boca Chica, just 30 km away from the city. Here you can chill on its white-sand beaches, take a dip into its crystal-clear waters or have some delicious typical dish. You cannot leave town without visiting the Sea Life Sanctuary at the National Aquarium. This place is perfect for a family trip. Walk through its transparent tunnels and get to see more than 250 marine species as if you were swimming with them.
Santo Domingo is plagued with history and charm. The city is home to the oldest fortress in the Americas. Built between 1501 and 1508 during the Spanish colonization, its function was to protect the city against pirates and English, French and Portuguese colonizers. Today, the Ozama Fortress will make you travel in time. Don’t leave the city without visiting it first.
Santo Domingo is one of the most diverse cultural hubs on this side of the world. From the Chinatown to its colonial neighborhood, the city hides many treasures within a Caribbean atmosphere. One of such treasures is Santo Domingo’s Mercado Modelo. Its streets have been famous since it was established in 1942. As you walk along Avenida Mella, near El Conde street, you’ll encounter many local craftsmen who will be eager to display the cultural richness of the Dominican Republic.
Santo Domingo is plagued with squares full of history, architecture and entertainment. At Plaza de la Hispanidad you will run into Nicolás Ovando, the founder of the city, while in Plaza España you will get a more cosmopolitan atmosphere filled with bars, restaurants and Dominican party vibes. Another cultural marvel you should visit is the Catedral Primada de América, which in 1546 was declared the first cathedral in the Western hemisphere. Wingo Tip: The cathedral’s south door or Gate of Geraldini is also known as the Gate of Forgiveness, so swing by it and get back home free of guilt ;)
If adventure is your thing, Santo Domingo has a lot to offer. Get to the Three Eyes National Park and stumple upon the caves that once were visited by the ancient Taino people. The caves have a series of lakes known as “the eyes”: Lago de Azufre or Sulfur Lake, La Nevera (the fridge) and Las Damas (the ladies) featuring turquoise blue water that seem to be taken out of a movie. You won’t want to miss this place –it’s just amazing!
